Sapa market located at the center of Sapa town and and is opened every day. But it is most crowded on Saturday late afternoon and evening.
Before the French built Sapa town into a town, the market place was on the sandy ground about 7 km east of the town now, at the junction of the main road to Lao Cai and the trail to Ta Phin Village.
Until 1980s, when the population of the region was small and transportation was very poor, It was really hard to communicate among villages, the market offered probably the only chances once a week for Hmong and Red Zao peoples to meet others.
The main market took place on Sunday but many went to the market the afternoon before because their villages were too far and it took many hours to go on foot. Of course there were no accommodation for rent then, so for passing the night they gathered around fire talking, playing their traditional music, dancing Gradually these activities attracted the youngsters from villages near by to come and turned the market into a dating place for lovers.
Nowadays, due to fast development in the region to make it easy for locals to communicate among villages, as a result, the market in Sapa has been becoming less important spiritually. However, it is still crowded every weekend and worthwhile to spend few hours to join local for a life experience.

Night 1: Hanoi night train to Lao Cai
At 08.00 pm our tour guide will pick you up at hotel lobby to the Hanoi railway station for night train to Lao Cai. Overnight on train. Include: Transportation, Overnight on train, Train tickets: Hanoi Lao Cai, (A/C 4 soft berth cabin)
Train arrives at Lao Cai Railway Station at 06.00 AM; you are picked up for breakfast. Today you will have chance to visit one of markets that hold on:
- On Tuesday (Coc Ly market): Coc Ly is a very small market where you can meet several ethnic minorities such as Flower Hmong, Black Zao, Phu La, Nung and Tay. The trip offers you a one-way boat ride along Chay River and a short walk to Trung Do village of Tay minority.
- On Saturday (Can Cau market): You will meet there several ethnic minorities such as Flower Hmong, Black Zao, Phu La as well as Chinese people.
- On Sunday (Bac Ha market): Every Sunday, the different and colorful ethnic minority come all here to sell their homemade products or buy something for the family. They are Hmong, Phu La, and Black Dzao, Tay or Nung minorities. Some of these ethnic minorities cant be met in any other areas. Day 2: Ma Tra Ta Phin night train to Hanoi (B, L)
Met up at your hotel by local guide at your hotel. The walk commences from Sapa on a trail running through the beautiful gardens and lush pine forests. You will then pass through the Black Hmong ethnic minority village of Matra, a very small village hiding way from the civilization. The walk continues through rice paddy fields and spectacular scenery. During the day you will also be able to visit a local school. You will enjoy your lunch before arriving at the Taphin village. Here you can hear about the unmixed cultural life of Black Hmong and Red Dao minorities, 2 largest ethnic groups in the area. You can already recognize them by dressing while they are both very famous of handicraft. You will enjoy walking among local people. The trip also offers you the opportunity to visit the local houses as well as visit the local caves. You will return Sapa by car. In the late afternoon, take the car back Lao Cai train station. You have dinner in restaurant near train station. Get on train back Ha Noi. Spend night on train. Day 3: Hanoi Arrival
Train arrival around 04.30am; tour finish at railway station. Turn back to your hotel on your own.
